Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego at the Door.
A single omission was enough. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to blend into the game plans and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of using it appropriately. Skill matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.
Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of the previous squad. He watched the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the squad's spirit and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals rather than teammates. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has made him realize that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to take tough decisions.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern about his personality,” the German said. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he reached. Everyone must help him and create a atmosphere which he can use his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
The star took up the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker in need of support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his performance in Manchester City’s win against the German side recently.
The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a strong case to select another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting the captain's style as a result.
It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for years. In my view it matches his abilities the most.”
He conceded there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has obvious passion to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a certain structure, with a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel talked about one star making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and the winger are other options if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a very strong squad into an more effective one.
