Texas Top Legal Officer Files Lawsuit Against Tylenol Manufacturers Regarding Autism Spectrum Claims

Courtroom Case
The Texas Attorney General, a Trump ally who is running for the United States Senate, accused pharmaceutical manufacturers of hiding the risks of acetaminophen

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is filing a lawsuit against the makers of acetaminophen, asserting the corporations withheld potential risks that the drug posed to children's cognitive development.

This legal action arrives a month after Former President Trump promoted an unsubstantiated connection between using acetaminophen - referred to as paracetamol - throughout gestation and autism spectrum disorder in children.

The attorney general is filing suit against J&J, which previously sold the medication, the exclusive pain medication approved for women during pregnancy, and Kenvue, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "deceived the public by gaining financially from discomfort and marketing drugs regardless of the potential hazards."

The manufacturer asserts there is no credible evidence connecting acetaminophen to autism.

"These corporations misled for generations, intentionally threatening countless individuals to boost earnings," Paxton, from the Republican party, said.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "deeply concerned by the perpetuation of misinformation on the reliability of acetaminophen and the potential impact that could have on the health of US mothers and children."

On its website, the company also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the applicable studies and there is lacking reliable evidence that shows a established connection between taking paracetamol and autism."

Organizations representing doctors and health professionals agree.

The leading OB-GYN organization has said paracetamol - the key substance in acetaminophen - is one of the few options for expectant mothers to treat pain and fever, which can present serious health risks if not addressed.

"In multiple decades of investigation on the utilization of acetaminophen in pregnancy, zero credible investigations has definitively established that the use of paracetamol in any stage of gestation results in neurological conditions in young ones," the association commented.

The lawsuit cites current declarations from the former administration in asserting the medication is reportedly hazardous.

Recently, the former president generated worry from public health officials when he instructed pregnant women to "fight like hell" not to use acetaminophen when unwell.

The US Food and Drug Administration then published an announcement that medical professionals should think about restricting the consumption of acetaminophen, while also stating that "a causal relationship" between the medication and autism spectrum disorder in children has remains unverified.

The Health Department head Kennedy, who manages the FDA, had vowed in April to conduct "a massive testing and research effort" that would determine the origin of autism spectrum disorder in a limited time.

But specialists advised that discovering a single cause of autism spectrum disorder - considered by experts to be the result of a intricate combination of genetic and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism is a form of lifelong neurodivergence and disability that impacts how people experience and relate to the world, and is recognized using medical professional evaluations.

In his lawsuit, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is campaigning for US Senate - alleges the manufacturer and J&J "intentionally overlooked and tried to quiet the research" around acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder.

This legal action aims to force the firms "remove any marketing or advertising" that asserts Tylenol is reliable for expectant mothers.

The court case parallels the grievances of a collection of mothers and fathers of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who sued the manufacturers of Tylenol in 2022.

Judicial authorities threw out the lawsuit, stating research from the family's specialists was lacking definitive proof.
